Groups Hold Unique Power

Group Therapy in Delray Beach

Why Consider Group Therapy?

When most people think of therapy, they think of working one-on-one with a therapist. While individual therapy can be very healing, it is not the only effective therapeutic approach. In fact, for certain mental health concerns, group therapy may be a more powerful or effective treatment.

Group therapy has been proven to be an incredibly effective stand-alone or supplementary therapeutic service for a wide range of mental health concerns. Some unique benefits of group therapy include opportunities to:

  • give and receive support from peers

  • receive guidance from specially trained clinicians who can help you understand how your concerns impact your interpersonal connections

  • opportunities to practice interpersonal skills in the moment and receive feedback right away

  • And, perhaps most important, is the experience of recognizing  you are not alone in your struggles.

Additionally, therapy groups are generally more cost effective, allowing for more frequent contact with your support framework over a period of time. All of this is accomplished in a confidential, safe space designed to accommodate you and the other group members.

Not all Groups are the Same

Breakwater offers two types of therapeutic groups: interpersonal process groups and theme-based support groups.

Interpersonal Process Group

Interpersonal process groups focus on helping individuals better understand themselves and others by facilitating meaningful and revealing interactions with a group of fellow members who agree to meet for a set time and frequency.

This group may be especially helpful for the following concerns:

  • Trouble making or keeping close connections

  • Loneliness

  • Adjusting to a new community

  • Difficulty with assertiveness and boundary setting

  • Social anxiety

Theme-Based Support Groups

Our theme-based therapy support groups serve individuals with a common concern or experience, where the primary focus is on giving and receiving encouragement, guidance, and validation around shared concerns. Inquire for additional information about the current group topics we offer.

Where and When do Groups Meet?

Breakwater therapy groups meet online, via a secure telehealth platform. Group members complete a free 30-minute screening consultation to ensure they fit a given group culture. Groups are led by either one or two clinicians and range in size from 4-8 individuals. Group therapy sessions occur weekly at the same day and time for a set number of weeks.
